Instead of showing his new film at the Tribeca Film Festival (which was cancelled like so many other events in NYC), film maker Jean-Cosme Delaloye made a documentary for National Swiss Television SRF about this surreal moment in time, and how New Yorkers – some of them originally from Switzerland – are struggling to survive this crisis. It has been an honor for me to be a part of this project, that tells the story of the pain New Yorkers are going through and also about the resilience and love we share for this city!

IRRESISTIBLE – A Tribute to Edith Piaf and Her Music

The ritual, the secret and the charisma of Edith Piaf and her chansons

By and with: Sue Mathys
Piano: Martin Schilling
Akkordeon: Robert Weber

Original English production directed by David Hilder and Music directed by John Bell

Jürg Wille Saal at the Löwen, Meilen
Seestr. 595, 8706 Meilen, Switzerland

Edith Piaf– idol, legend, huge voice in a tiny frame – was born 104 years ago. What was her secret? What made her IRRESISTIBLE to every man (and woman) she met? What force drove her life, fueled her voice, endowed her songs with an undeniable authenticity that has captivated more than one generation?

Sue Mathys interpretations of Edith Piaf’s chansons focus on the energy, Intensity and the music of the exceptional talent. Edith Piaf’s life at the beginning of the last century was a tour de force: The girl from the gutter became the highest paid female singer of her time.
Her entire life, she burned full of joie de vivre, generosity of spirit, with loud laughter and tender abandon, like a candle from both ends. Piaf was an adamant believer in romantic love, but also a passionate worker and ardent lover of the arts. She discovered many new talents and supported them; wrote lyrics and music, indeed, collaborated with the composers and lyricists who created virtually all of her songs – mostly uncredited. She was active during the war in the résistance, and performed in stage plays and in movies. Living with full-throttled passion, in her music as well as in her life, she inspired generations. Her disarming directness and charming naiveté, as well as the sheer power of her emotional investment in her performance, enchanted audiences all over the world. Her truth has lost nothing of its power; today, her chansons still hit the core of everyone’s heart.

What the critics say:
“Sue Mathys is a force with a multilayered voice and fierce determination” Fort Worth Telegram
And there is the acting of Sue Mathys, bringing to life all the facets of Piaf’s character: Her vulnerability, her ability to love, her joie de vivre, her wild laughter, her self doubts, disappointment and hope – in short, a moving roller coaster of emotions.” Luzerner Zeitung
“Sue Mathys gets rather frighteningly close to the ideal embodiment of Piaf; she is so intense and impressive, that it keeps giving you the chills” Züri Tip
“Sue Mathys’ presence on the stage is breathtaking. She sings, laughs, screams, drinks, loves, and rages with unabated intensity” Die Freundin
“Mathys has a powerful voice, warm and silky when needed to charm or wheedle and bursting with iron-willed girt” Criticalrant.com
“Sue Mathys is a singer whose glorious voice fills a stage, and an actress whose in-depth interpretation of a song brings its character and meaning alive”
“Some Roses sound like trumpets, others saxophones. Mathys can sound like any instrument in the orchestra” Dallas Morning News

deathtrap

“After four flops in a row, a playwright who was once Broadway’s brightest light is so desperate to come up with another hit, he says he would kill for one. Is he joking? Thrilling twists and razor-sharp wit combine in one of the funniest murder mysteries of all time. Opening to rave reviews and a Tony Award nomination at its New York premiere, Deathtrap holds an unbeaten record as the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway. This wickedly funny slice of murderous showbiz satire is sure to have audiences guessing whodunit right up to the final curtain.”

Sue Mathys played Helga Ten Dorp in Ira Levin’s thriller – holding the record of the longest running thriller comedy in Broadway history! –  DEATHTRAP
at the John W.Engeman Theater in Northport, NY,
directed by Richard T.Dolce.

Also featuring: James Lloyd Reynolds, Loren Dunn, Mary Mossberg and Patrick Husted
Performances: July 24 through  September 7, 2014

Reviews

Go see this incredibly well-crafted thriller as fast as you can….. The quintet [of a cast ] is a perfect squad for enacting what Levin, the master of misdirection, had in mind. One more player in the unpredictable game of ‘Omigosh’ would have been one too many”…. Dolce has steered his talented charges through the maze masterfully.”
Smithtown Matters

The cast of Northport’s stunning John W. Engeman Theatre is truly outstanding. Their effecting performances, directed by Richard T. Dolce, make Deathtrap a wonderful kick off to The Engeman’s incredible eighth season. This is truly a Broadway experience. …….
Providing the comedy is Sue Mathys as Helga Ten Dorp, the Bruhl’s nosy, gypsy neighbor…….
A riveting story, an excellent cast, and the gorgeous Engeman Theatre make for a wonderful night of theatre.
Broadwayworld.com

While the clever plotline is certainly enough to keep your attention, the added bonuses of excellent acting and a fantastic set heighten the experience…..Sue Mathys as psychic Helga Ten Dorp had wonderful comedic timing. Mathys also delivered a consistent accent which bolstered her character’s mysterious aura…
With twists, turns and tumults, Deathtrap will keep you on the edge of your seat.
NY Theatre Guide

Supporting roles handled deftly: Some humor is introduced by Mathys as Helga Ten Dorp, the Dutch psychic who rents a nearby cottage… Her interpretation of the role fit nicely with the unfolding plot.

Sue Mathys played Matron “Mama” Morton in Kander and Ebb‘s musical classic CHICAGO at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, 19.June – 28.July 2013.

Sue Mathys is the voice of Calpurnia in THE JUDGMENT OF QUINTUS, an upcoming new Video Game by Greg Edwards.

A madcap romp through ancient Rome, THE JUDGMENT OF QUINTUS unites classical literature, drama, myth, and history into an adventure of epic proportions without being remotely educational or, for that matter, accurate.

Calpurnia, the Dowager Empress, assumed her royal title upon marrying Emperor Gathalbus who died in a terrible dowaging accident. Calpurnia is frightfully embarrassed by her name, but, as the cost of changing her stationery is prohibitively expensive, she has boosted her ego by starting her own religion. Calpurnipalianism, with its silent births and celebrity following, has become quite the rage.

Dallas Morning News, Lawson Taitte, 12.September 2011:

“To make GYPSY work, you have to have a great Mama Rose. Mathys creates a fascinating, offbeat Rose, far more attractive than the usual interpretation. You find it natural that those around her keep forgiving this sexy and charming creature for doing the most horrifying things. As Mathys’ performance in the final monologue, “Rose’s Turn” demonstrates, and as other characters say of her, this Rose can talk herself into believing her fantasies. Literally and figuratively, she’s a dreamer, if a destructive one.

Mathys sings the role with much care for phrasing and unprecedented tonal variety. Some Roses sound like trumpets, others saxophones. Mathys can sound like any instrument in the orchestra.”

Criticalrant.com, Alexandra Bonifield, 12.September 2011:

“Mathys’ powerful voice, warm and silky when needed to charm or wheedle and bursting with iron-willed grit when life lets Mama Rose down, drives the show with gut-wrenching desperation. Defiantly courageous even facing abandonment, Mama Rose fills spacious Carpenter Hall’s bare stage with her dynamic persona and superlative instrument, displaying every iota of the vocal talent and star quality that has earned her the highest of accolades, and standing ovations, on both sides of the Atlantic”.

D Magazine, Lindsey Wilson, 12.September 2011:

“Mathys is a force, bulldozing her way through Rose’s iconic songs and relentlessly pushing her scenes with a focused, almost manic, determination. Her single-mindedness regarding her daughter’s careers (and her own livelihood) is scary in its intensity yet admirable for its consistency. She makes the mothers on “Toddlers & Tiaras” look like wimps.”

TheaterJones, Kris Noteboom 14.September 2011:

“Mathys’ earnestness and tenacity as Rose lend a depth to the role that can be easily lost. It would be easy to play Rose as a monster, a one-dimensional megalomaniac. But, Mathys imbues her with a latent vulnerability, an unquestionable love for her children, and a healthy dose of delusion. The end result is an incredibly complex character who is actually able to retain some semblance of audience sympathy […] Lyric Stage’s production gives you and opportunity to see this show like almost no one has ever seen it. The novelty combined with the high production value and powerful performances make GYPSY a must-see.”

Fort Worth Star Telegram, Mark Lowry, 14.September 2011:

“Mathys proves herself a force, with a multilayered voice and fierce determination. In the final number, Rose’s Turn, which is like the “To be or not to be ” soliloquy of musical theatre, sie captures all the internal anger and emotion that the musical has led up to […] Her Mama Rose is driven to the core, both frightening and magnetic.”

The Daily Campus, Alex Hoskins, 14.September 2011:

“Mathys’ voice is stunning throughout, but it really takes off when Rose emerges. Her performance brings the entire perfromance to a standstill as you see Rose’s heartbreak race across her face. Mathys earns her standing ovation with the simplest of turns just before the final curtain, begging one last glimmer of the spotlight with a split second look to the audience.”

The Examiner, Christopher Soden, 15. September 2011:

“Sue Mathys as Rose, is a powerhouse tucked in to a small package. You can feel her bringing more bravado to each song until her formidable finish, when she shales the rafters and makes your hair stand on end. Mathys makes the role entirely her own, stnading in no on’es shadow, and it’s exhilarating.”

Reviews:

Cabaret Scenes

(Peter Haas):

“Sue Mathys is both a singer whose glorious voice fills a stage, and an actress whose in-depth interpretation of a song brings its character and meaning alive […] it takes a powerhouse actress to play and sing the part of another, mad actress. Sue’s closing numbers at Urban Stages – the Desmond character’s “As If We Never Said Good-Bye” and “With One Look” – created a thrilling finale.”

Wolf Entertainment Guide

(William Wolf):

“Mathys has a powerful voice and actress’ ability to mine the most of a lyric and an appealing, relaxed stage presence […] I came away again with appreciation of Mathys as an outstanding artist in full command of her voice and her chosen material. Onward and upward.”

Bistroawards

“Seeräuberjenny, sung in German, had the impact and the confidence of the Piaf. Mathys spit, snapped and flashed to perfection. Two numbers from Sunset Boulevard sent shivers up my spine…”

Gay City News

(David Noh):

“The Swiss singing actress displayed a powerfully versatile voice and jaw-dropping range at her concert at Urban Stages. A seaseoned star in Europe, now living here, she was witty and lyrical in David Yazbek’s “What Was A Woman To Do” (from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), performed the Brecht-Weill “Pirate Jenny” with devastating Teutonic savvy, made Sondheim classics seem new again, and electrifyingly sang both arias from Sunset Boulevard (a favourite role).  Piaf is another role she’s essayed, and she managed to both easily evoke that imperishable chanteuse and make this oft-heard material thrillingly her own. Casting directors, get a quick clue!”

In summer 2010, Sue Mathy starred in GYPSY, refferd to as “the greatest American musical” by many critics and writers, playing Mama Rose!

At the New Bedford Festival Theatre, MA, Sue Mathys played the role of Rose, the production also featured: Jessica Norland as Louise and Mara Gabrielle as June. Director/Choreographer: Michael Susko, Music Director: Juan Rodriguez, Artistic Direction by George Charbonneau, produced by Armand Marchand.

Review in South Coast Today of July 21st, 2010, by David B.Boyce:

“Of course, the driving bullheaded energy of GYPSY is Mama Rose, the ultimate nightmare of stage mothers. The dynamic Sue Mathys subtly weaves Rose’s Tyranny with warmth, without ever betraying her goals to make her daughters theatrical stars. The entire production captures the desperation of the 1930’s Depression in its sets, costumes and choreography, but Mathys gently imbues it, and her role, with a genuine humanity essential to making Rose appealing and understandable, even while being monstrously driven and annoying. Vocally, Mathys clearly loves performing the classic songs of GYPSY and does so with impish charm and great flair. Her Garland-like gesturing puncuates her lyrics with spontaneity and emotional expression appropriate for the role, and her penultimate release  in “Rose’s Turn” is a shattering cry to the world and her fate. Two choices the actress makes, unique to this critics viewing experience, are her sobbing breakdown (brief and apt), and the look of longing she tosses back at her final exit. Excellent choices by both the director and performer.”
